By forming bonds between characters, you can secure peace treaties, gain access to new resources, and even absorb neighboring factions without a single battle.

The system is built around two primary interactions: courtship and marriage. Courtship involves a series of social actions and gift-giving to increase affinity, while marriage solidifies the bond and provides tangible in-game benefits. Each character has unique preferences and personality traits that influence how quickly you can win their favor. Understanding these nuances is the first step to mastering the romance system.

How to Initiate a Romance

To begin a romantic relationship, you first need to have a character who is eligible. Eligible characters are usually leaders of other factions, independent heroes, or key figures within your own court. You can identify them by their portrait icon, which will have a small heart symbol if they are open to romantic advances. Approach them through the Diplomacy menu and select the "Courtship" option.

The initial phase requires you to send gifts and perform favors. Gifts fall into several categories: Artifacts, Resources, and Treasures. Each character has a preferred gift type, which you can discover through dialogue or by checking their character profile. For example, a warlord might value weapons, while a scholar prefers ancient scrolls. Successfully giving a preferred gift grants a significant affinity boost. You can perform one courtship action per turn, so plan your resources carefully.

The Marriage Proposal

Once you have built enough affinity (indicated by a full heart meter), you can propose marriage. This is a critical decision that requires careful consideration. Before proposing, ensure you have a suitable Dynastic Ring (a special item crafted in the Workshop) and enough gold to host a wedding ceremony. The ceremony itself is an event that can be attended by other factions, further boosting your reputation. After marriage, your spouse becomes a member of your court, offering unique bonuses such as increased tax revenue, faster troop recruitment, or improved scientific research.

This mechanic adds a layer of depth to the game, encouraging players to think generations ahead.

Common Pitfalls and Troubleshooting

Many players struggle with the romance system due to a lack of patience or poor resource management. One common mistake is neglecting to check the character's current mood. If they are at war or have recently lost a battle, they will be less receptive to romantic advances. Always wait for a peaceful period in their faction's history before initiating courtship.

Another issue is failing to maintain the relationship after marriage. Just because the wedding is over does not mean the work is done. Neglecting your spouse can lead to a "Broken Alliance" event, where they may leave your court and take a portion of your resources with them.
