MECCHA CHAMELEON Mechanics Guide: Master Camouflage & Survival

Core Gameplay Loop: Hide or Seek

MECCHA CHAMELEON is a multiplayer hide-and-seek game where one player acts as the Seeker and the rest as Hiders (Chameleons). Each round is divided into two phases: the Preparation Phase and the Search Phase.

During the Preparation Phase, all Hiders spawn with a white, uncolored body. They have a limited time to observe their surroundings and paint themselves to match the environment. The Seeker is locked in a starting area and cannot move until the phase ends.

Once the Search Phase begins, the Seeker enters the arena and must find the disguised Chameleons. Hiders can move, but moving too quickly or making sudden color changes can give away their position. The round ends when all Hiders are caught or the timer expires.

Painting and Camouflage System

The painting mechanic is the heart of MECCHA CHAMELEON. Each Hider has a color palette and a brush tool. To camouflage, you must select a color that closely matches the surface behind you.

Pro Tip: Use the eyedropper tool (default key: E) to sample a color directly from the environment. This ensures a perfect match and saves precious time.

Your camouflage effectiveness is measured by a Camouflage Meter. This meter fills up the closer your color matches the background. A full meter makes you nearly invisible to the Seeker. If you move to a different colored surface, your meter will drop, forcing you to repaint.

Attention: Painting your entire body takes time. Prioritize painting the side of your body that faces the Seeker's most likely approach path.

Movement and Posing

While staying still provides the best camouflage, movement is sometimes necessary. Your movement speed is slower than the Seeker's sprint. Use the Crouch key to move silently and reduce detection range.

The Pose System allows you to freeze in place and adopt a static shape. While posing, your movement is locked, but your Camouflage Meter is temporarily boosted by 20%. This is ideal when a Seeker is nearby and you need to blend into a complex object like a plant or a box.

  • Use crouch walk when near the Seeker.
  • Activate pose mode when the Seeker is within 10 meters.
  • Avoid sprinting unless you are certain the Seeker is far away.

Seeker Mechanics: Scanning and Catching

The Seeker has a unique set of tools. Your primary ability is the Scan Pulse. This ability sends out a wave that highlights any Chameleon whose Camouflage Meter is below 40%. The Scan Pulse has a 15-second cooldown.

To catch a Hider, you must get close and press the Catch button. The catch range is 2 meters. If you catch the wrong target (a non-player object), you suffer a 3-second stun penalty, giving Hiders time to escape.

Strategy: Use Scan Pulse near areas with many objects. Hiders often try to blend into clusters of props. A failed catch is costly, so always confirm your target visually before lunging.

Scoring and Round Structure

Each match consists of multiple rounds. Players take turns being the Seeker. The scoring system works as follows:

  • Hider survives the round: +100 points
  • Hider caught: +0 points
  • Seeker catches all Hiders: +50 points per catch
  • Seeker fails to catch all Hiders: +20 points per Hider remaining

The player with the highest total score at the end of all rounds wins. Points also contribute to your Progression System, unlocking new cosmetic skins and palette colors.

Advanced Tips for Hiders

Mastering the mechanics requires practice. Here are advanced strategies to elevate your gameplay:

Color Layering

Apply multiple thin layers of paint to match gradient backgrounds. This is essential on maps with lighting effects or shadows.

Sound Cues

Your footsteps produce noise. Walk on soft surfaces (carpet, grass) to reduce sound. Avoid metal or glass floors.

Decoy Movement

Occasionally change your pose or shift slightly to mimic a moving object. This can trick inexperienced Seekers into scanning the wrong area.
