Understanding where your game progress is stored is crucial for protecting your hours of strategic gameplay. In Silent Howl, save files are kept locally on your PC. By default, the save file location is:

Replace [YourUsername] with your Windows account name. The AppData folder is hidden by default, so you may need to enable "Show hidden files" in your File Explorer settings. Alternatively, press Win + R, type %localappdata%, and navigate to SilentHowl\Saved\SaveGames.

How to Back Up Your Save File

Regular backups prevent losing your character progress, unlocked roles, and settings. To create a backup:

1. Navigate to the save folder path above.
2. Copy the entire SaveGames folder.
3. Paste it to a safe location like your Desktop, an external drive, or cloud storage (e.g., Google Drive, OneDrive).
4. For extra safety, rename the backup folder with the date, for example: SaveGames_Backup_2026-06-09.

Restoring a Save File

If you need to restore your progress from a backup, follow these steps:

1. Close Silent Howl completely.

3. Delete or rename the current SaveGames folder (keep it as a secondary backup).
4. Copy your backed-up SaveGames folder into the same location.
5. Launch Silent Howl. Your progress should be restored.

Important: Restoring a save file from a different Steam account or a corrupted backup may cause errors. Always verify your backup is intact before overwriting.

Save File Not Loading

If the game fails to load your save, ensure the file is not set to "Read-only." Right-click the save file, go to Properties, and uncheck "Read-only."

Lost Progress After Update

Game updates from Yorbi rarely affect save files, but incompatibilities can occur. If you lose progress after an update, restore from your most recent backup. Check the Patch Notes for any save-related changes.

Cloud Save Conflicts

Silent Howl uses Steam Cloud for save synchronization. If you encounter conflicts between local and cloud saves, Steam will prompt you to choose which version to keep. Always select the most recent one. For manual control, disable Steam Cloud for Silent Howl in your Steam library properties.

Save File and Multiplayer Progress

Since Silent Howl is a multiplayer strategy game, your save file primarily stores your account progression, unlocked characters, cosmetic items, and settings. Match history and in-game session data are handled server-side by Yorbi. This means your save file backup protects your local unlocks but does not affect your ranked match records.
