Why You Might Want to Restart Axom

Axom is a challenging blend of tower defense and Roguelite strategy where every decision shapes your fortress. While the game encourages persistence through its procedural generation and unlock system, there are several legitimate reasons to start over. You may have hit a wall against a late-game swarm, want to experiment with a different build order from scratch, or simply wish to experience the early-game tension again. Restarting wipes your current progress, including unlocked upgrades and buildings, allowing you to approach the alien world with fresh knowledge.

Before resetting, consider if a Prestige run might suit your goals instead. Prestige resets some progress but grants permanent bonuses.

How to Manually Delete Your Save File

Axom stores your progress in a local save file on your PC. There is no in-game "New Game" button, so you must manually remove this file to trigger a fresh start. Follow these steps carefully.

  1. Locate the save folder

    Navigate to the following directory on your PC: %AppData%\Local\Axom\Saved\SaveGames. You can paste this path into your File Explorer address bar.

  2. Identify the correct save file

    Inside the folder, you will find one or more .sav files. The primary save file is typically named AxomSave_0.sav. If you have multiple saves, look for the one with the most recent modification date.

  3. Back up your save (optional)

    If you are unsure about deleting forever, copy the .sav file to your desktop or another folder. This lets you restore your old progress later.

  4. Delete the save file

    Select the .sav file and press Delete on your keyboard, or right-click and choose "Delete". Confirm the action if prompted.

  5. Launch the game

    Start Axom. The game will detect no save data and present you with the introductory screen, allowing you to begin a completely new game.

Starting a Fresh Game After Reset

Once you have deleted the save file and launched Axom, you will be greeted by the opening sequence. The game will generate a new procedurally crafted alien world for you to explore and defend. You will need to choose your starting upgrades from a limited pool, as all previously unlocked content is gone.

Initial Choices

When you start fresh, you select from a small set of basic buildings and defensive modules. Your early strategy will focus on gathering resources and building a core fortress.

World Generation

Each new game creates a unique map with different terrain, resource nodes, and corruption patterns. No two restart runs are identical.

What You Lose and What Stays

Restarting Axom is a full reset. Understanding exactly what is erased helps you decide if this is the right move for your playthrough.

  • All progress is lost: This includes your fortress, unlocked buildings, upgrades, and any resources you have gathered. The game treats you as a first-time player.
  • No permanent account unlocks: Unlike some Roguelite games, Axom does not have a meta-progression system that persists across manual resets. Everything is tied to the single save file.
  • Steam achievements remain: Your Steam achievements are stored on the Steam servers, not in the local save file. Deleting your save will not revoke any achievements you have earned.
  • Game settings stay: Graphics, audio, and control settings are stored in a separate configuration file. Your resolution and key bindings will remain unchanged after a reset.

Alternative: Using Prestige for a Partial Reset

If you want a fresh challenge but do not want to lose everything, Axom offers a Prestige system. This is a built-in feature designed for players who have completed the main campaign or want a harder start.

Prestige is a better option if you want to keep your overall progress while increasing difficulty. Manual restart is only recommended if you want to erase all records and begin entirely anew.

Troubleshooting a Failed Restart

If you follow the steps above but Axom still loads your old game, check the following:

  • Save file location: Ensure you navigated to the correct folder. Some users may have a different install path if they moved the game.
  • Cloud saves: Steam Cloud may have restored your deleted save. Disable Steam Cloud for Axom in your Steam library properties before deleting the file again.
  • Multiple save slots: Axom may create backup files. Delete all .sav files in the SaveGames folder to ensure a complete reset.

After resolving these issues, launch the game again. You should see the title screen with no "Continue" option, confirming a successful restart.
