Axom Save File Guide: Location, Backup & Transfer

Axom Save File Location

Axom stores your game progress locally on your PC. Unlike cloud-dependent titles, Axom relies on local save files that are automatically created as you play. Here is the exact path where your save data is stored:

Default Save Path: %USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\Hairy Penguin\Axom\Saves\

To quickly access this folder, press Win + R on your keyboard, paste the path above, and hit Enter. You can also navigate manually through C:\Users\[YourUsername]\AppData\LocalLow\Hairy Penguin\Axom\Saves\.

The AppData folder is hidden by default. If you cannot see it, enable "Hidden items" in File Explorer's View menu.

Inside the Saves folder, you will find one or more files with a .sav extension. Each file corresponds to a different save slot or playthrough. The file naming convention typically includes a timestamp or slot number to help you distinguish between different runs.

How to Back Up Your Save File

Backing up your Axom save file is essential to prevent data loss, especially before major updates or if you plan to reinstall the game. Follow these simple steps:

  1. Locate the Saves folder

Navigate to %USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\Hairy Penguin\Axom\Saves\ using the method described above.

  2. Copy the .sav files

Select all .sav files in the folder. Right-click and choose "Copy" or press Ctrl + C.

  3. Paste to a safe location

Create a new folder on your desktop, external drive, or cloud storage (like OneDrive or Google Drive). Paste the files there using Ctrl + V.

  4. Label your backup

Rename the backup folder to something like "Axom Save Backup - [Date]" so you can easily identify it later.

For maximum safety, create a backup before every major session or after achieving significant progress in your run. Roguelite games like Axom can have runs that last hours, and losing progress can be frustrating.

Restoring a Save File

If you need to restore your progress from a backup, the process is just as straightforward:

  1. Locate your backup folder containing the .sav files.
  2. Navigate to the original save directory: %USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\Hairy Penguin\Axom\Saves\.
  3. Optional but recommended: Rename the existing .sav files to something like old_save.sav to keep them as a secondary backup.
  4. Copy your backup .sav files into the Saves folder.
  5. Launch Axom. Your progress should now reflect the state of the backup.

Always close Axom completely before modifying save files. Editing saves while the game is running can cause corruption or unexpected behavior.

Transferring Saves Between PCs

If you play Axom on multiple PCs, you can manually transfer your save files to continue your progress elsewhere. Here is how:

  1. On the source PC: Follow the backup steps above to copy your .sav files to a USB drive or cloud service.
  2. On the target PC: Install Axom and launch it at least once so the game creates the necessary folder structure.
  3. Close the game and navigate to the save folder on the target PC.
  4. Paste your backed-up .sav files into the folder, overwriting any existing files if prompted.
  5. Launch the game to verify your progress has transferred.

Axom does not currently support native cloud saves through Steam. All save transfers must be done manually. For more details on game features, check the Axom gameplay overview guide.

Troubleshooting Common Save Issues

Even with careful management, you might encounter save-related problems. Below are common issues and how to resolve them.

Save File Not Loading

If your save file does not appear in the game's load menu, it might be corrupted or incompatible with the current game version. Try these steps:

  • Verify the file is in the correct folder and has a .sav extension.
  • Ensure the game is fully updated. Save files from older versions may not work with newer patches.
  • Restore a backup if you have one. If not, you may need to start a new run.

Game Crashes After Loading a Save

A crash on load often indicates a corrupted save or a mod conflict. To fix this:

  • Disable any active mods and try loading again. Refer to the mods guide for more information.
  • Try loading an earlier backup.
  • Verify game files through Steam: Right-click Axom in your library, select Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files.

Save File Missing After Reinstall

If you reinstalled Axom and your saves are gone, you may have forgotten to back them up. Unfortunately, without a manual backup, local saves are permanently deleted when the game is uninstalled. Always back up your saves before uninstalling any game.

Never delete or modify save files unless you are certain of what you are doing. Incorrect edits can render your progress unusable. For more tips on managing your playthrough, see the beginner tips guide.

Managing Multiple Save Slots

Axom allows you to maintain multiple save slots, which is useful for experimenting with different strategies or keeping a backup of a successful run. To manage multiple saves effectively:

  • Use descriptive names or timestamps when backing up files.
  • Keep only the most recent backups to save disk space.
  • Regularly clean up old saves by deleting unnecessary .sav files from the folder.
  • Locate your save folder at %USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\Hairy Penguin\Axom\Saves\
  • Back up saves before major updates or reinstalls
  • Restore backups by copying .sav files into the folder
  • Transfer saves manually between PCs using a USB or cloud drive
  • Troubleshoot corrupted saves by verifying game files or restoring backups
  • Manage multiple slots by labeling and organizing your backup files
