Understanding Your Core Form

In Crude Oil, you begin as a small, sentient puddle of crude. Your primary objective is survival and growth. Your core form has three fundamental attributes: mass, momentum, and adhesion.

Mass determines your size and the damage you can deal. You gain mass by absorbing smaller oil spills scattered throughout the environment. Momentum is crucial for movement; you slide and bounce across surfaces, and your speed directly impacts collision damage. Adhesion controls how well you stick to walls and ceilings, allowing for unique traversal options.

Growth and Evolution Mechanics

Your growth is not just about getting bigger. As you accumulate mass, you unlock new abilities and evolution stages. The game tracks your total mass absorbed, not just your current size.

There are three primary growth thresholds:

• Puddle Stage (0-50 mass): Basic movement and weak bounces.
• Blob Stage (50-200 mass): Unlocks the "Slam" ability, allowing you to damage ground-level enemies.
• Pool Stage (200+ mass): Unlocks "Heavy Slam," which creates a shockwave, and allows you to interact with certain machinery.

Movement and Traversal

Movement in Crude Oil is physics-based and requires practice. You control your direction and can build momentum by sliding downhill or bouncing off walls.

Key movement techniques include:

• Wall Bounce: Jumping into a wall at an angle will launch you in the opposite direction.
• Ceiling Crawl: By maintaining adhesion, you can crawl across ceilings to avoid ground-based threats.
• Slipstream: Moving through narrow passages increases your speed temporarily.

Heavy Machinery Operation

A unique mechanic in Crude Oil is your ability to take control of heavy machinery. This is not a direct piloting system; instead, you must possess the machine by covering its control panel with your oil.

Once possessed, you can use the machine's functions:

• Drills: Used to break through rock walls and access new areas.
• Pumps: Can be reversed to either suck in enemies or spray them with high-pressure oil.
• Crushers: Massive hydraulic presses that can flatten multiple enemies at once.

Combat and Enemy Interaction

Your primary attack is your body. Collision damage scales with your mass and speed. The "Slam" and "Heavy Slam" abilities are your main offensive tools.

Enemies in Crude Oil are varied, from simple security drones to massive tanker trucks. Each has a unique weak point. For example, drones are vulnerable to high-speed impacts, while trucks must be flipped over to expose their underbelly.

Progression and Unlock System

Progression is tied to your mass and the chapters you complete. As you advance, you unlock permanent upgrades that persist between deaths, such as increased starting mass or better adhesion.

The game features a "Prestige" system. Once you reach a certain mass threshold, you can choose to "refine" yourself, resetting your mass but granting permanent bonuses to future runs. This is key to tackling the game's later challenges.
