Hold Your King Co-Op Guide: Master Two-Player Chaos
Updated 2026-06-14

Understanding the Co-Op Dynamic
Hold Your King is built from the ground up as a two-player cooperative experience. You and a partner must physically carry a temperamental, crown-wearing monarch through a series of increasingly treacherous medieval obstacle courses. The king has zero patience: if he falls, gets crushed, or is dropped too many times, his rage meter fills and it is game over. Every level is a physics-based puzzle where communication is not optional—it is essential.
Your primary objective is to reach the Throne Room at the end of each stage. The king sits on a shared platform that both players must lift and balance. One player controls the left side, the other the right. If you tilt too far, the king slides off. If you bump into a wall, the king takes damage. If you let go at the wrong moment, the king plummets. Success depends on synchronizing your movements, calling out hazards, and trusting your teammate completely.
Team Roles and Communication
While both players share the same basic controls—move, jump, grab, and release—effective teams quickly fall into complementary roles. The Leader takes point, calling out upcoming traps, timing for jumps, and direction changes. The Follower mirrors the Leader’s movements while focusing on maintaining platform balance. This does not mean the Follower is passive; they must react instantly to the Leader’s calls and adjust their grip pressure.
Use voice chat if possible. Short, clear commands work best: “Left side up,” “Drop now,” “Jump in three, two, one.” Avoid long explanations mid-level. Before starting a difficult section, pause and agree on a plan. Many teams fail because one player assumes the other sees the same threat. Always vocalize what you see.
A common beginner mistake is both players trying to lead. This creates conflicting movements and rapid king tilt. Decide who calls the shots before you begin. The Leader should be the player with better spatial awareness or faster reaction time. The Follower should be the player who stays calm under pressure.
Pro Tip: Assign one player to watch the king's rage meter. If it is climbing, slow down and focus on perfect balance rather than speed. A steady pace beats a frantic rush every time.
Navigating Traps and Hazards Together
Each level in Hold Your King introduces new mechanical threats. You will encounter swinging axes, collapsing floors, rolling boulders, spike pits, and flame jets. Many traps are symmetrical, requiring both players to dodge in opposite directions simultaneously. If one player dodges left and the other dodges right, the platform twists and the king takes damage.
For symmetrical traps (twin axes swinging inward), both players must duck or jump at the exact same moment. Count down together: “Three, two, one, jump.” If you are playing with a stranger, use the in-game ping system to mark the timing.
For asymmetrical traps (a single crusher on one side), the player on that side must lift their edge of the platform to create a slope, sliding the king away from danger while the other player holds steady. This requires precise grip pressure—too much lift and the king slides off the other side.
Moving platforms are the biggest co-op challenge. Both players must step onto the moving surface at the same time, keeping the platform level as it shifts. If one player is late, the king tilts backward. Practice the “simultaneous step” technique: approach the moving platform side by side, pause, then step forward together on a count.
Critical Warning: Never attempt to cross a gap by having one player jump first. The platform will tilt violently, and the king will almost certainly fall. Always move as a unit.
Taming the King’s Temper
The king is not just cargo—he is an active participant in your failure. His rage meter increases with every bump, drop, or sudden jolt. Once the meter is full, the king throws a tantrum, shaking the platform violently and causing both players to lose grip. This almost always results in a failed level.
To keep the king calm, prioritize smooth movement over speed. Avoid sharp turns. When you need to change direction, slow down, communicate the turn, and rotate the platform gently. If the king starts grumbling (a visual cue), stop moving and let the platform settle for a moment.
Certain levels include “rage triggers”—specific events that automatically anger the king. These include walking too close to fire, bumping into certain wall types, or dropping from a height greater than two player heights. Memorize these triggers in each level and plan your route to avoid them.
If the king’s rage meter is over 75%, consider restarting the level. Pushing through almost always leads to a tantrum at the worst possible moment. It is faster to restart than to recover from a rage event.
Advanced Co-Op Techniques
Once you have mastered the basics, these advanced techniques will help you clear the hardest levels:
The Pivot: One player lifts their side high while the other lowers theirs, creating a diagonal ramp. This lets the king slide past low-hanging obstacles without you having to jump. Use this for tight crawlspaces.
The Shield: When facing a barrage of small projectiles (arrows, darts), one player can angle their side of the platform upward to block incoming shots. The other player keeps the king steady. This sacrifices visibility for protection.
The Sprint: Some timed sections require fast movement. Both players must synchronize their sprint (hold the run button) and jump together. Practice the sprint-jump rhythm in the first level before attempting it in later stages.
The Reset: If you lose grip on one side, the other player must immediately lower their side to ground level. This prevents the king from falling and gives the first player time to regrab. Call out “dropping” as soon as you feel your grip slip.
Did You Know? The developers at Next Big Game Studio designed the physics system so that the king's center of mass shifts based on his mood. An angry king is heavier on one side, making balance harder. Keeping him calm is a mechanical advantage, not just a flavor detail.
Level-Specific Co-Op Strategies
While every level demands teamwork, a few stand out as co-op killers. Here is how to handle them:
The Drawbridge Gauntlet: This level features a series of collapsing drawbridges over lava. Both players must cross each bridge simultaneously. If one player is faster, the bridge tilts and the king falls. Solution: hold hands (in-game) and move as a single unit. Count steps aloud.
The Pendulum Pit: Massive swinging pendulums block your path. Time your approach so both players are on the same side of the pendulum’s arc. When the pendulum swings away, sprint forward together. If one player gets caught on the wrong side, the platform will be torn apart.
The King’s Revenge: In this final level, the king actively tries to escape. He will shift his weight unpredictably. The best strategy is to keep moving slowly and constantly adjust your grip. Do not fight his movements—flow with them. This level is a test of patience, not speed.

Common Co-Op Mistakes and Fixes
Even experienced teams make these errors. Here is how to avoid them:
Mistake 1: Both players looking at the same thing. Each player should watch their own side. The Leader watches forward and calls traps; the Follower watches the king’s balance and the rear. Split your attention.
Mistake 2: Panic jumping. When a trap appears, many players jump instinctively. This tilts the platform. Instead, communicate first: “Trap left, hold steady.” Only jump when both agree.
Mistake 3: Ignoring the rage meter. The meter is your most important UI element. If it is climbing, change your approach. Slow down, take a safer route, or restart.
Mistake 4: Playing with a random teammate without communication. Use the in-game voice or text chat. If your teammate does not respond, treat them as a Follower and lead aggressively. Adjust your movements to compensate for their unpredictability.
