Into The Depths Elite Enemies Guide

Overview of Elite Enemies
Elite enemies in Into The Depths are formidable variants of standard creatures that appear deeper in the caverns as your colony expands. Unlike regular foes, elite enemies possess enhanced stats, unique attack patterns, and significantly better loot tables. Encountering them marks a turning point in your expedition, as they guard valuable resources and progression gates.
These enemies are not random spawns; they are tied to specific depth thresholds and colony milestones. For a complete breakdown of all enemy types, refer to our enemy types guide.
Crystal-Fused Crawler
The Crystal-Fused Crawler is an early-game elite enemy encountered around depth level 50. Its chitinous exoskeleton is embedded with luminescent crystals that absorb damage and reflect projectiles.
Abilities:
- Crystal Shard Volley: Fires a spread of sharp crystals that deal piercing damage.
- Reflective Carapace: Temporarily reflects 50% of ranged damage back at the attacker.
- Burrow Strike: Dives underground and emerges beneath a random colonist.
Loot Drops:
- Crystal Shards (used for early-game upgrades)
- Chitin Plates (crafting material)
- Rare: Glowing Core (required for advanced upgrades)
Strategy: Use melee units with high armor to engage while ranged attackers reposition. Avoid firing during the Reflective Carapace phase.
Do not use explosive weapons against Crystal-Fused Crawlers; the blast can trigger a chain reaction with its crystals, causing area damage to your units.
Obsidian Golem
The Obsidian Golem is a mid-game elite enemy that appears near magma vents at depth 150+. This massive construct is immune to fire and has devastating melee attacks.
Abilities:
- Magma Stomp: Creates a shockwave that knocks back nearby units and leaves burning ground.
- Obsidian Armor: Reduces incoming damage by 70% for 10 seconds.
- Lava Geyser: Summons a geyser of molten rock from beneath a target.
Loot Drops:
- Obsidian Fragments (high-tier crafting)
- Molten Core (used for gear crafting)
- Rare: Ancient Tablet (unlocks lore entries)
Strategy: Use water-based attacks or frost grenades to temporarily crack its Obsidian Armor. Kite the Golem away from your base to avoid collateral damage.
Shadow Wraith
The Shadow Wraith is an end-game elite enemy that spawns in the deepest caverns (depth 300+). It is invisible when stationary and teleports short distances.
Abilities:
- Soul Drain: Drains health from a target colonist, healing the Wraith.
- Phase Shift: Becomes intangible for 3 seconds, avoiding all damage.
- Shadow Bolt: Fires a bolt that slows and applies a damage-over-time effect.
Loot Drops:
- Shadow Essence (used for prestige upgrades)
- Ethereal Silk (rare armor material)
- Rare: Void Crystal (required for end-game builds)
Strategy: Equip your colony with detection items like Torch Towers or Reveal Beacons. Use area-of-effect attacks to force the Wraith out of invisibility.
The Shadow Wraith is vulnerable to light-based weapons. Crafting a Luminous Blade will significantly shorten the fight.
Abyssal Leviathan
The Abyssal Leviathan is a boss-level elite enemy that serves as the gatekeeper to the final biome. It is encountered at depth 500 and requires a well-prepared colony.
Abilities:
- Tentacle Slam: Slams multiple tentacles in a line, dealing massive damage.
- Dark Water: Floods the area with acidic water that damages buildings.
- Regeneration: Heals 5% of its max health every 10 seconds unless interrupted.
Loot Drops:
- Leviathan Scale (legendary armor component)
- Abyssal Heart (used for final upgrades)
- Rare: Ancient Key (unlocks secret ending)
Strategy: Focus fire on the Leviathan's glowing weak points to interrupt its Regeneration. Use resource management to ensure your colony can sustain a prolonged fight.
Elite Enemy Spawn Conditions
Understanding when and where elite enemies spawn is crucial for planning your expeditions.
- Crystal-Fused Crawler: Depth 50+, after building first Crystal Extractor
- Obsidian Golem: Depth 150+, after reaching 100 colonists
- Shadow Wraith: Depth 300+, after completing the "Dark Descent" quest

Each elite enemy also has a respawn timer of 7 in-game days. Mark their locations on your map for farming runs.
