Working Late Save File Guide: Location, Backup & Restore

Save File Location on PC

Working Late stores your progress locally on your computer. The save file location depends on which platform you are using. For the Steam version, the default path is:

C:\Users\[YourUsername]\AppData\Local\WorkingLate\Saved\SaveGames

Replace [YourUsername] with your Windows account name. If you cannot find the folder, ensure hidden files are visible. Enable this by opening File Explorer, clicking "View," and checking "Hidden items."

The save file is typically named SaveSlot_0.sav or similar. Each save slot corresponds to a different file. If you have multiple playthroughs, you may see SaveSlot_1.sav, SaveSlot_2.sav, and so on.

How to Back Up Your Save

Backing up your save file is essential to prevent losing progress due to corruption or accidental deletion. Follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the save folder location listed above.
  2. Copy the entire SaveGames folder.
  3. Paste it into a secure location, such as your Documents folder or an external drive.
  4. For extra safety, create a compressed (ZIP) archive of the folder.

It is recommended to back up your save after each major play session, especially after completing a night shift or acquiring rare upgrades.

Restoring a Saved Backup

If you need to restore progress from a backup, simply reverse the process:

  1. Close Working Late completely.
  2. Go to the save folder location.
  3. Replace the current SaveGames folder with your backup copy.
  4. Launch the game. Your progress should be restored to the point of the backup.

If the game does not recognize the save, ensure the file names and folder structure match exactly. Do not rename the files.

Troubleshooting Corrupted Saves

Save corruption can occur due to unexpected crashes, power outages, or mod conflicts. Signs of corruption include the game failing to load, missing progress, or errors on startup. Try these solutions:

  • Verify game files on Steam: Right-click Working Late in your library, select Properties, go to Local Files, and click "Verify integrity of game files."
  • Disable mods if you have any installed. Mods can interfere with save data.
  • Use a previous backup if you have one. This is the most reliable fix.
  • Delete the corrupted save and start a new game if no backup exists.

Cloud Saves and Steam Sync

Working Late supports Steam Cloud saves. This feature automatically syncs your progress across multiple devices. To check if cloud saves are active:

  1. Open Steam and go to your Library.
  2. Right-click Working Late and select Properties.
  3. Under the General tab, ensure "Enable Steam Cloud synchronization" is checked.

Cloud saves are stored separately from local files. If you encounter conflicts, Steam will prompt you to choose which version to keep. Always select the most recent one.

Manual Save Management Tips

For advanced users, manual save management offers more control. You can rename save files to create multiple branching playthroughs. For example, rename SaveSlot_0.sav to SaveSlot_0_BeforeBoss.sav to keep a checkpoint. The game only reads files with the original naming pattern, so renamed files act as backups.

Keep in mind that save files are not interchangeable between different game versions. After an update, old saves may not work. Always check patch notes for save compatibility warnings.
