Default Key Bindings

MECCHA CHAMELEON is a multiplayer hide-and-seek game where you play as a chameleon that must paint its body to blend into the environment. Understanding the controls is the first step to mastering the art of disguise. The game is currently available on PC via Steam, and the default key bindings are designed for keyboard and mouse.

The primary movement keys are the classic WASD layout. W moves forward, A moves left, S moves backward, and D moves right. To run, hold the Shift key while moving. Your camera is controlled by moving your mouse, allowing you to look around the environment and spot hiding spots or searching players.

For painting, the core mechanic of the game, you use the Left Mouse Button to apply paint to your chameleon's body. You can also use the Right Mouse Button to erase paint or sample a color from the environment. The Scroll Wheel allows you to cycle through your recently used colors quickly.

Advanced Movement and Actions

Beyond basic movement, MECCHA CHAMELEON offers several advanced actions to help you survive. Press the Spacebar to jump, which can help you reach higher ledges or cross small gaps. While in the air, you can press Spacebar again to perform a double jump, giving you extra mobility.

To cling to walls or ceilings, approach a surface and press E. This allows you to stay hidden in unexpected places. While clinging, you can move slowly along the surface using the WASD keys. Press E again or jump to detach. For a quick dash in any direction, press Q. This ability has a short cooldown, so use it wisely to dodge a searching player's line of sight.

Painting and Color Mechanics

The painting system is your primary tool for camouflage. To paint a specific color, aim your crosshair at a surface and press the Left Mouse Button. Your chameleon will immediately adopt that color. You can also use the Color Palette by pressing Tab. This opens a radial menu where you can select any color you have previously sampled.

Sampling colors is done by pressing the Right Mouse Button while looking at a surface. This stores the color for later use. You can store up to five colors at a time. The 1-5 number keys allow you to quickly switch between these stored colors. For precise painting, hold Ctrl while moving your mouse to adjust the paint application area.

Camera and Perspective Controls

Controlling your view is crucial for spotting threats and finding good hiding spots. Use your mouse to look around freely. You can press C to toggle between first-person and third-person camera views. The third-person view is generally recommended for better spatial awareness.

To zoom in, press Z. This is useful for inspecting your camouflage against a surface or looking at distant objects. Press X to reset your camera to the default position behind your chameleon. For a quick look behind you without turning around, press V to perform a quick 180-degree camera snap.

Communication and Emotes

While MECCHA CHAMELEON does not have voice chat by default, it offers several ways to communicate with other players. Press Enter to open the text chat. You can type messages to your team or to all players, depending on the game mode.

For non-verbal communication, use the Emote Wheel by pressing B. This allows you to perform various emotes like pointing, waving, or dancing. You can also use quick pings by pressing Middle Mouse Button. This places a marker on the environment that your teammates can see. To react to a ping or an emote, press F.

Game Mode Specific Controls

Different game modes in MECCHA CHAMELEON have unique controls. In the standard Hide-and-Seek mode, the Hider role uses all the painting and movement controls. The Seeker role, however, has a special Scan ability activated by pressing R. This highlights any chameleons that are not perfectly camouflaged for a brief moment.

In the Art Mode, where players compete to create the best camouflage, you have access to a more detailed paintbrush. Press G to toggle between brush sizes. Use Shift + Scroll Wheel to adjust brush opacity. In Live Mode, which is designed for streamers, you can press F1 to activate a special viewer interaction overlay.

Customizing Your Controls

MECCHA CHAMELEON allows you to fully customize your key bindings. To do this, go to the main menu and select Options, then Controls. Here, you can remap any action to a different key. You can also adjust mouse sensitivity and invert the Y-axis.

For players using a controller, the game supports Xbox and PlayStation controllers. Plug in your controller, and the game will automatically detect it. You can switch between keyboard and controller at any time. The controller layout uses the left stick for movement, right stick for camera, and face buttons for jumping, painting, and interacting.

Tips for Mastering Controls

To become a skilled player, practice using the controls in the game's tutorial mode. Focus on smooth camera movement while painting to ensure your camouflage is flawless. Use the double jump and wall cling abilities to reach high vantage points that are hard for seekers to check.

Remember to use the Color Palette (Tab) to quickly switch between sampled colors. This is faster than resampling from the environment. In high-pressure situations, a quick dash (Q) can save you from being spotted. Combine this with a quick color change to disappear into a new surface.
